Vehicle and asset tracking is one of the largest existing applications for LTE Cat-1 and Cat-1bis connectivity. Fleet telematics units, trailer trackers, cold chain monitors, and portable asset location devices are deployed in the millions globally on LTE Cat-1 connections.
eRedCap Advantages for Telematics
Telematics devices typically transmit location, status, and sensor data at regular intervals – well within eRedCap’s ~10 Mbps uplink capability. The 5G SA requirement introduces a consideration for mobile deployments (coverage availability along routes) but this resolves progressively as 5G SA coverage expands. For fleet operators, the practical transition question is device replacement cycle timing rather than any technical limitation.
Power Efficiency for Trailer and Asset Tracking
Non-powered trailer trackers and asset tracking devices operate on battery. eRedCap’s PSM and eDRX power saving features – particularly eDRX in RRC_INACTIVE introduced in Release 18 – enable longer intervals between position reports while maintaining 5G SA connectivity, extending battery operational life compared to equivalent LTE Cat-1 devices.
5G Low Latency for Real-Time Tracking
For high-frequency location reporting applications (construction site machine tracking, emergency vehicle fleet management), 5G SA’s lower latency compared to 4G LTE is relevant. eRedCap devices benefit from the same 5G Core architecture improvements as higher-tier 5G devices, including reduced signalling overhead for frequent small-packet transmissions.
